Er zijn weinig werken die door Herbert von Karajan zo vaak zijn uitgevoerd en opgenomen als het Requiem van Verdi. Sommige critici vinden zijn interpretaties te zwaarwichtig, maar op zijn solisten is meestal weinig aan te merken. Op deze studio-opname uit 1972 bestaat het ensemble uit de goed op elkaar ingespeelde sopraan Mirella Freni, alt Christa Ludwig, tenor Carlo Cossutta en bas Nicolai Ghiaurov.
