"Flutist Robert Dick decided to do a CD with several of the spacier jazz standards, and with the Soldier String Quartet, he succeeds in bringing life to John Coltrane's "India" and Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," among others. His highly expressive playing harks back to Eric Dolphy, and though this disc might not be a good choice for purists, the playing is highly enjoyable. The traditions of classical music are combined with the improvisation of and technical skills of jazz to create the imaginative music of New York-born and Switzerland-based flute player, Robert Dick. Describing himself as "a musician with twenty-first century skills and eighteenth century attitudes," Dick continues to pioneer a new role for the flute in modern music. Dick continues to take such a high energy approach to his instrument that he has been dubbed, "the Hendrix of the flute"." (Amazon)
"History: From 1990 until 1997 Jorrit led “Trio Jorrit Dykstra”, with bassist Mischa Kool and British drummer Steve Argüelles. He wrote most of the compositions, but the band also played some of Argüelles’ tunes, as well as sparkling versions of pieces by Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Nichols, the Beatles and Balkan traditionals, all giving space for some adventurous improvising. The trio created a fresh and original group sound in which melody, rhythm, colour, subtility and equality were the most important values. All this was mixed with an exciting drive and a touch of satire. The Trio released three CDs, and they performed extensively on the European clubs and festivals circuit, as well as on radio and TV. Clarinettist Marty Ehrlich, reed player Lothar Ohlmeier, pianist Benoît Delbecq, guitarist Marc Ducret and string player Stuart Hall were featured as guest artists with the Trio. They also accompanied a series of silent movies from the beginning of this century." (Jorritdijkstra.com)
