"Accompanied by the top-notch rhythm section of organist Joey DeFrancesco and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts (as well as assorted horn players and a tabla player), Paul Bollenback delivers a program of soul and R&B classics, beginning and ending with Stevie Wonder songs ("Too High" and "Visions") and including such other chestnuts as Otis Redding's "Dock of the Bay" and Ashford & Simpson's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." The results are consistently pleasing, and sometimes surprising -- "Dock of the Bay" is taken at a startlingly brisk tempo with funky drums stuttering underneath; "My Girl" is played with a broad sense of swing, to nice effect. Bollenback's style isn't terribly distinctive (he spends a lot of time on Montgomery-esque octave runs), but his playing is always excellent. The album's sole disappointment is the goopy solo acoustic arrangement of "Visions" that closes the program." (Allmusic)
"DeFrancesco -- who plays not only his usual Hammond B-3 but other organs, piano, and trumpet on the recording -- sticks largely to material from Jackson's solo career here, with an emphasis on "Thriller" (five of the nine songs), using the original song structures as takeoff points. DeFrancesco's interpretations reference Jackson's originals but depart from them substantially enough that they never feel like copies, and at times he and the band expand far outside of the basic chordal boundaries Jackson set down. More than anything, DeFrancesco appears to be having fun with this set (he even sings a couple). And when he and the band (guitarist Paul Bollenback is on fire) get cooking, as they do more often than not -- some of these tracks ("Billie Jean," "Rock with You," "Beat It") seriously rock -- it's hard not to get caught up in the party atmosphere." "I Never Went Away does not reflect a change in Carol Sloane's style so much as a refinement of her art. Sloane has almost always gotten the big things right. Listen to any of her records and you will hear a singer with excellent intonation, superb time and a genuine feel for the meaning of a lyric. When her attention wanders, whether due to dissatisfaction or unfamiliarity with the material, the accompaniment or the surroundings, the results tend to be pleasantly generic. However, when she is on her game, Sloane engages in jazz singing of the highest order—richly nuanced and emotionally compelling. On I Never Went Away, she is not only on her game but also at the top of it. "Steve Gadd is misschien wel de beste drummer die überhaupt te vinden is. De kans dat er een stuk of tien CD's in uw kast staan waar Steve Gadd achter de drums zit is zeer groot. Maar het leukst is het als Gadd met eigen projecten komt aanzetten. Zo kwam hij in de jaren tachtig met de Gadd Gang. De kracht was de loomheid. Muziek waarin nauwelijks iets gebeurde, maar het stond als een huis. Nu heeft hij met Ronnie Cuber uit de oude Gang een nieuwe band om zich heen geformeerd. En wat een lekker bandje is het! Joey DeFrancesco (Hammondorgel) en gitarist Paul Bollenback doen de oude bezetting verbleken. Joey DeFrancesco speelt in "Bye Bye Blackbird" ook nog trompet terwijl hij zichzelf op Hammond (en bas) begeleidt. Ziet kans om alszodanig nog een geestig muzikaal robbertje te vechten met de knorrende bartitonsax van Cuber. Het is feest op deze CD! Hammondorgelliefhebbers zullen hier van watertanden! Op deze opname zijn twee toppers uit de orgeljazz, die onderling bijna een halve eeuw in leeftijd schelen, samen te horen, beiden gezeten aan een machtig klinkende Hammond B3. In 9 vaak behoorlijk lange stukken hebben ze vele solospots, waarin de vele mogelijke klankkleuren van het instrument goed tot recht komen. Ze worden bijgestaan door twee gitaristen, twee saxofonisten en twee drummers, die in verschillende line-up-groottes bijdragen aan de veelal souljazz-getinte pret. Vooral gitaristen Paul Bollenback en John Hart geven een aantal niet te versmaden jazzgitaarsoli weg op hun zo te horen hollow body electrische gitaren. Deze heruitgave uit 2003 betreft een hybride SACD. Hij is dus op een gewone CD-speler te draaien, maar op een SACD-speler staat tevens een 5.1 surround mix van het album.
Vroeg album van de toen 21-jarige Hammondorgelvirtuoos. Hij beheerst alle finesses van het orgelspel: dartel dansende nootjes worden met veel swing gespeeld, maar voor heerlijk breeduit rausen met het Lesleypedaal voluit is 'ie niet te beroerd. Door kien spel met de registers verschiet de sound constant van kleur. En da's nog niet alles, want op vier stukken bewijst hij ook een prima trompettist te zijn. Het meeste trompetwerk wordt overigens verzorgd door Jim Henry. Verder dient Paul Bollenback vermeld: hij levert niet alleen enkele sterke stukken aan, maar geeft op z'n gitaar ook nauwelijks minder virtuoos weerwoord aan Joey. Die overigens voornamelijk kiest voor oudere ("Bye Bye Blackbird") en vooral jongere ("Naima", "ESP", "Sister Sadie") standards op een 5 kwartier lang spannende CD.
