Geremasterde editie uit 1996 van conceptalbum uit 1973. Hoewel het vier jaar oudere "Tommy" een stuk bekender is, is "Quadrophenia" een volwassener werkstuk van een volwassener groep. Allerlei sociale issues in de Britse sixtiesmaatschappij passeren de revue in dit verhaal rond een Britse grootsteedse puber. Niet alleen overtreft componist Pete Townshend zichzelf, er wordt ook fraai gemusiceerd. Let daarbij vooral ook op het aandeel van John Entwhistle (de prominente zoemende baspartijen, de fraaie blazersarrangementen).

"Driven by Pete Townshend's arching musical ambitions, "It's Hard" was an undistinguished final studio effort from the Who (natuurlijk is deze recensie geschreven vòòr het verschijnen van "Endless Wire" in 2006, HB). Featuring layers of synthesizers and long-winded, twisting song structures, the album featured few memorable melodies and little energy, with only the anthemic "Athena" and the terse "Eminence Front" making a lasting impression. [The compact disc reissue adds four bonus tracks to the original 12-song lineup, all of them live. These alternate versions of "Eminence Front," the title song, and "Cry If You Want," along with John Entwistle's "Dangerous," all come from performances at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada. Although no specific recording dates are given in the booklet, these bonus tracks offer far more lively versions of these songs than their original studio counterparts." Laatste album met de niet lang na de release overleden drummer Keith Moon, uit 1978. Niet bepaald hun beste plaat trouwens: sommige nummers zijn gewoonweg flauw en slapjes en hebben te lijden onder arrangementen met te weinig ballen.
Eerste album met voormalig Small Faces-drummer Kenney Jones als opvolger voor de in 1978 overleden Keith Moon. "Without Moon, the Who may have lacked the restless firepower that distinguished their earlier albums, but "Face Dances" had some of Pete Townshend's best, most incisive compositions since "Quadrophenia". "Don't Let Go the Coat" was one of his better odes to Meher Baba, "You Better You Bet" was a driving rocker, as was the rueful "Cache Cache," while "How Can You Do It Alone" was a solid ballad. While Townshend's songs were graceful and introspective, Roger Daltrey delivered them without any subtlety, rendering their power impotent. This 1997 reissue adds five tracks to the original nine-song lineup, including three tracks that didn't make the album's final cut (Townshend's "I Like Nightmares," "It's in You," and "Somebody Saved Me") and two live tracks, a rough jam of "How Can You Do It Alone" and John Entwistle's "The Quiet One". Zijn bijdrage is trouwens allesbehalve 'quiet': het is bijna metal.
