Elton John (78) geeft haar niet alleen alle ruimte om haar geweldige stem te laten horen, ze mocht met zijn vaste tekstschrijver Bernie Taupin ook meeschrijven aan nieuwe liedjes. Openingsnummer "The Rose Of Laura Nyro" is eindelijk de ode die John al jaren belooft aan een van zijn allergrootste idolen. Een typische Elton John-ballad op het randje van bombast, door John en Carlile groots samen gezongen. Het wordt gevolgd door een ode aan een andere held, "Little Richard’s Bible", waarin John zijn piano laat klateren als in zijn wild rockende jaren zeventig. "Swing for the Fences" is het sterkste nummer dat ze samen zingen, maar de mooiste liedjes zingen ze alleen. Haar "You Without Me" en zijn "When This Old World Is Done Without Me" doen hopen dat ze het niet bij slechts één album zullen laten. "The Firewatcher’s Daughter" is a heavily thematic album, though this may take a few listens to reveal itself. The album tasks itself with measuring love and distance in this poetically spatial manner, hoping to enhance understanding about the nature of human cohabitation in life. Numerous songs deliver lines articulating such appreciation, devotion, and sometimes downright symbiotic need, that the natural motors of self-reflection about one’s own relationships with others are sent into high gear. `Over de stille dagen waarnaar het album vernoemd is, krijgen we meteen al het beste te horen op opener Right On Time. Mooie pianomuziek en zachte zang overtuigen vrijwel meteen en al gauw toont Brandi Carlile aan dat ze weet hoe een nummer op te bouwen. Right On Time is meteen eentje die binnenkomt en die warme, rijke sound smaakt naar meer. Net als op ouder werk, komt de Amerikaanse ook hier heel gezellig en intiem over; alsof ze bij jou thuis in de living wat liedjes speelt. Broken Horses is een rasechte countrysong en This Time Tomorrow is dan weer een rustig indienummertje. Of de teksten nu gepaard gaan met uptempo muziek of zacht gitaargetokkel, Brandi Carlile laat ons alweer in haar hart kijken." (Dansende Beren)
