A Day In New York (1993)

"Tony Scott led several small groups of various sizes during the month of November 1957, resulting in three separate LPs without duplicating any of the 24 tracks. This two-CD set collects everything recorded during these sessions. Scott's core group features pianist Bill Evans, either Milt Hinton or Henry Grimes on bass, and drummer Paul Motian. In addition to his powerful clarinet, Scott plays a potent baritone sax on six selections. The music includes a few standards, a handful of originals by Scott, and some obscure compositions. Trombonist Jimmy Knepper is a guest on several songs. As are Sahib Shihab and Clark Terry. Even though Evans was yet to make his mark as a leader or composer, his "Five" is heard in extended form rather than as a brief sign off as he played on early recording dates. He also solos brilliantly in "There Will Never Be Another You." The title to this collection is a bit misleading, as trustworthy discographies list these sessions as being recorded over several days." (Allmusic).

Chair In The Sky (1979)

"After bassist/composer Charles Mingus' death on January 5, 1979, a reunion band featuring some of his former sidemen called Mingus Dynasty was formed. Cut just six months after the bassist's demise, this album was the first Mingus Dynasty recording, and it has its moments. Such alumni as altoist John Handy, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, trumpeter Jimmy Owens, and tenorman Joe Farrell meet up with two members of Mingus' last major band (pianist Don Pullen and drummer Dannie Richmond), plus bassist Charlie Haden, who ably fills in for the late bandleader. In addition to "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" (which was becoming popular at the time), the septet performs three numbers from Mingus' collaboration with Joni Mitchell, plus "Boogie Stop Shuffle" and "My Jelly Roll Soul." Handy and Pullen, in particular, fare well in this spirited setting, although one does miss the innovative bassist." (Scott Yanow, Allmusic; 4 uit 5 sterren)

A Modern Jazz Symposium Of Music And Poetry With Charlie Mingus

A Modern Jazz Symposium Of Music And Poetry With Charlie Mingus (1957)

Geremasterde heruitgave uit 2005, met drie tracks méér dan de eerste CD-uitgave van 10 jaar eerder. "Despite its title, this album does not have poetry and is not a "symposium." What it does have is a memorable narration by Lonnie Elder on "Scenes in the City" (one of the best collaborations between the spoken word and jazz), four obscure Charles Mingus compositions for his sextet (which consists of the bassist/leader, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, Shafi Hadi on tenor and alto, either Bill Hardman or Clarence Shaw on trumpet, pianist Horace Parlan, and drummer Dannie Richmond), and three previously unreleased performances including a run-through of Dizzy Gillespie's "Woudy 'N' You". An excellent set of challenging yet often accessible music." (Scott Yanow, Allmusic)

The Jimmy Knepper Sextet - Tell Me...

The Jimmy Knepper Sextet - Tell Me...

Yes, Yes, Notet (1979)

"It was a tragedy that Lee Konitz's versatile nonet was not able to succeed commercially. Just like its leader, the group was able to stretch from swing standards, bop and cool jazz to freer improvisations and challenging originals. This SteepleChase release (featuring the nonet when it was comprised of such fine players as trumpeters Tom Harrell and John Eckert, trombonists Jimmy Knepper and Sam Burtis, baritonist Ronnie Cuber, pianist Harold Danko, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Billy Hart in addition to Konitz on alto and soprano) features the group at its best on such pieces as "Footprints," "Stardust," "My Buddy" and four songs by Jimmy Knepper. It's an excellent outing from a somewhat neglected group." (Allmusic) CD-release uit 1986 van LP uit 1979.
