Hot House Flowers (1984)

"The obvious antecedent for Hot House Flowers is Clifford Brown with Strings, although Wynton Marsalis scales back the strings considerably from Heftis florid arrangements (the maudlin menaces of the human heart, per Stanley Crouchs liner notes). In that sense, its more connected to Winter Moon: It leaves more room for cookin interaction with Marsalis working rhythm section (featuring pianist Kenny Kirkland and drummer Jeff Tain Watts, with Ron Carter sitting in on the bass chair). His tenor-sax brother Branford makes comments as well. The textures are at their best when they simply fill out key passages, as on Django and Marsalis title track. Even so, their billowy appearance on For All We Know is the most elaborate that the orchestra gets; Hot House Flowers is a jazz-with-strings document that is best distinguished by its taste." Jazz In Film (1999)

"If you're attracted to jazz that evokes late nights, dark corners and glittering cityscapes, Jazz In Film is a must-have. This is about as classy a collection of after-hours jazz as you're likely to hear. The music is emotional, strongly melodic and beautifully atmospheric. Terence Blanchard has written four film scores as Spike Lee's jazz composer of choice, but he mostly mines other people's work on this excellent CD, a collection of nine movie themes." Random Abstract (1988)

"Today Ill be reviewing Branford Marsalis 1987 album Random Abstract. This album is one I rarely hear many people talk about and thats a shame. This album is daring, energetic, and the virtuosity of the musicians only drives this point home. With Branford Marsalis on sax, Lewis Nash on drums, Delbert Felix on bass, and Kenny Kirkland on piano, this album is a sign of things to come from Branford Marsalis and his group." Famiiar Ground (1997)

"Elvin Jones will always be best-known for his association with the classic John Coltrane Quartet (1960-1965) but he also had a notable career as a bandleader and continued to be a major influence in music. One of the all-time great drummers (bridging the gap between advanced hard bop and the avant-garde), Jones is the younger brother of a remarkable musical family that also includes Hank and Thad Jones. He went on a European tour with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and then started leading his own groups, which in the '90s became known as Elvin Jones' Jazz Machine. He remained active well into the 2000s and continued to push himself musically with the Jazz Machine, inviting young lions into the fold and touring regularly."(Allmusic)

I Remember Clifford (1992)

Eerbetoon van Arturo Sandoval aan zijn collega-trompettist Clifford Brown, die in 1956 omkwam bij een auto-ongeluk. "Due to the straight-ahead nature of the music on this CD, plus trumpeter Arturo Sandoval's self-restraint, I Remember Clifford has been many jazz purists' favorite among the trumpeter's releases. Sandoval, who is joined by pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Charnett Moffett, drummer Kenny Washington, and either Ernie Watts, David Sanchez, or Ed Calle on tenor, pays tribute to the great Clifford Brown by performing ten selections previously recorded by Brown, plus his original "I Left This Space for You." The emphasis is on bebop (no Latin or Cuban rhythms on this date), with the highlights including "Daahoud," "Joy Spring," "Cherokee," and an emotional "I Remember Clifford."" (Allmusic).

Wynton Marsalis (1981)

"Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis's debut on Columbia, recorded when he was only 19, made it clear from the start that he was going to be a major force in jazz. At the time Marsalis (who was originally a bit influenced by Freddie Hubbard) was starting to closely emulate Miles Davis of the mid-'60s and his slightly older brother Branford took Wayne Shorter as his role model. The inclusion of Davis's rhythm section from that era (pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams) on four of the seven selections reinforced the image. The three other numbers feature such up-and-coming talents as pianist Kenny Kirkland, Charles Fambrough or Clarence Seay on bass and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, helping to launch the rise of the Young Lions. But although not overly original, there is a great deal of outstanding playing on this set, including a definitive version of Tony Williams's "Sister Cheryl" and the long tradeoff between Wynton and Branford on "Hesitation.""
