"Tenor saxman Delius put together one of the best working jazz bands of the new millennium, and at least half the credit goes to those mainstays of the European scene, drummer Han Bennink and cellist Tristan Honsinger. The group's method of improvising suites utilizing written themes introduced democratically by any member. It works really well, bringing to mind the successful suite recordings of jazz master Sonny Rollins. The group also brings together many of the interests of the fascinating Honsinger, who has always created a unique improvised-sounding classical music, or classical-sounding improvisation. Bennink just swings and swings, setting up marvelous backgrounds and head-smashing punctuations for the tunes. The fourth member is the Canadian bassist Joe Williamson, who works beautifully with everybody. Fans of modern jazz that balances noise and improv with strong melodies and swinging rhythms will like this group." (Allmusic)
"Reedman Michael Moore is well known for his propensity as a composer, soloist, and improviser. He is featured as a composer here, and also as a bandleader. The 17 pieces that make up Tunes for Horn Guys were written with this particular ensemble in mind. The music here pays tribute to three very different elements of Moore's musical personality: the ghosts of composers who influenced him, the landscape and mythology of America, and the pervasive and persuasive place of Euro-style improvisation on modern music. These small works rely on the shimmering timbres of brass and reeds as harmonic extensions of one another in forming a color palette that cannot be identified as having one particular shade or shape. Moore shines as both a composer of haunting clarity and as a bandleader of unshakable faith and vision that there is still possibility in harmonically succinct and restrained music, even in the presence of visionary improvisation. Truly wonderful." (Allmusic)
CD by Amsterdam based tentet with 12 original compositions by leader/trombonist Joost Buis, that zoom in on various combinations of players. Catchy themes and zoomin grooves with the focus on improvisation. "Astronotes has its own ensemble personality, developed over a decade of frequent gigs. Where other leaders rush under-ripe bands into the studio, Buis waited until the lineup had been fully tweaked, the concept fine-tuned, and the pieces developed to let their facets and the players shine." (Kevin Whitehead in AV guide) "Buis and his band play quite convincingly, not only when they extend ideas from the written page, but also when they innovate at the instant. There is a sense of fun imparted to several of the tunes, a zest and vitality that grabs right away." (Jerry D'Souza on allaboutjazz.com) "Fabulous arranged/improv'd jazz with that Dutch character, minus the silliness that sometimes accompanies it, but not without an uplifting vibe throughout."(Gary Sisco on jazzcornertalk)
