This release includes new works written by Pēteris Vasks (b. 1946), the most well-known composer from Latvia, performed by the Latvian Radio Choir and Sinfonietta Riga directed by Sigvards Kļava. During the years both the choir and the orchestra have collaborated extensively with the composer and premiered several works by him. Three of these works were written in 2016: Da pacem, Domine is according to the composer, a powerful cry of desperation for our times, a prayer for our mad world. Mein Herr und mein Gott is a work inspired by a solemn meditation written by a 15th century Swiss mystic Nicholas of Flüe, also known as Brother Klaus. The lyrics of Laudate Dominum, the title piece of the album, consist of only one sentence which is repeated by the choir. The choral texture of the work alternates with majestic organ episodes. The remaining two works in the album, Prayer (Lord, open our eyes) (2011) and The Fruit of Silence (2013) are based on texts by Mother Teresa. (bron: Ondine)
This album of cellist Sol Gabetta features works by the Latvian composer Peteris Vasks (*1946). The main work on this CD is a world premiere-recording: the Concerto No. 2 for Cello and String Orchestra Klatbutne / Presence written for Sol Gabetta and commissioned by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. The music resembles the music of Arvo Pärt but is pretty unique. It also temporarily combines Sols cello with her voice in a fascinating manner. Gabetta and the orchestra premiered this work in Amsterdam on October 25th 2012 with great success. Peteris Vasks himself was closely involved in the recording of the concerto. Sol recorded Musique du Soir for cello and organ with her mother, a professional organ player. The third work on the album is Gramata Cellam, a 13-minute piece for cello solo which Sol often played as an encore in many concerts. It is a striking piece because Sol Gabetta can be heard singing on this piece. (bron: Sony Classical)
Dat van de drie Baltische landen vooral Estland en Letland een geweldige koortraditie hebben en dat deze ondanks Sovjet repressie altijd levendig bleef is bekend. Logisch dat deze traditie ook moet worden gevoed met nieuw en vernieuwend repertoire. De Letse componist Peteris Vasks (1946) heeft daaraan substantieel bijgedragen zoals het materiaal op dit tweetal CDs leert. Misschien niet zon wonder met een vader als dominee. Pater noster uit 1991 in nog een vroeg werk in tamelijk minimalistische stijl. Dona nobis pacem uit 1996 klinkt al wat guller en evocatiever, maar pas met een werk als de Missa uit 2000/05 is van een nog hogere expressieve orde. Het is een van de mooiste miszettingen uit de afgelopen decennia. Koor en waar nodig in de niet a cappella werken orkest dragen deze werken tot in het detail uiterst verzorgd voor. Dit koor concerteerde 28 maart 2007 in het Muziekcentrum in Enschede en voerde toen o.a. "Litene" uit, dat u op deze CD aantreft.
"De harteklop van het lijden wordt het onrecht dat Vasks' land Letland is aangedaan door de bezettende USSR genoemd in de toelichting op zijn drie strijkkwartetten. Het eerste kwartet uit 1977 is uitgesproken getourmenteerd, met barre dissonanten en gruwelijke glissandi, maar tegelijkertijd heeft het een enorme stuwkracht en momenten van diepe bezinning. In de loop der jaren is Vasks idioom minder rabiaat geworden. In het 2de kwartet is alles opgehangen aan de waslijn van lange doorgaande tonen, een stoplap waarmee Vasks toch aardig wegkomt, en nummer 3 zaait ritmische opwinding aan de hand van verspringende ritmes en effectieve contrasten tussen woeste climaxen en quasi-middeleeuwse bicinia, opgeluisterd met klankrijke special effects. Het jonge, in Engeland gevestigde, maar voor driekwart uit Nederlanders bestaande Navarra Quartet begrijpt zijn muziek tot op de microseconde, en speelt op een niveau dat als uitzonderlijk mag worden betiteld." Het Altenberg Trio speelt het Pianotrio "Episodi e Canto perpetuo" op 5-11-2008 in het Muziekcentrum, Enschede. "At the climaxes of both these chamber works by Latvian composer Péteris Vasks are love songs. The eight-movement piano trio from 1985 reaches its peak with the achingly beautiful Canto perpetuo while the six-movement Quartet achieves its apogee in the searingly effective Canto principale. Vasks harmonic language is fundamentally tonal, though with some fairly fearsome dissonances, and his sensibility is resolutely post-modernist, though shot through with a neo-romantic expressivity. The Trio Parnassus performs the works with insight and strength, the trio gets it all to make musical and dramatic sense. Recorded in transparent yet palpable digital sound by Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm, this disc deserves to be heard by fans of the composer and by listeners who like contemporary music of the not especially fearsome variety."
