Inspired in part by the Goldberg Variations and Schoenberg’s solo piano music, “Suite For Piano” is Zorn’s very personal take on some of the oldest traditional classical forms. It is performed here by one of the most dedicated, virtuosic, and passionate interpreters in the Zorn universe, Brian Marsella, whose educational experience (too “jazz” for the classical world and too “classical” for the jazz world) makes him the perfect interpreter of Zorn’s cross-pollinating musical poetics. Accompanied by the telepathic rhythm section of Jorge Roeder and Ches Smith (Heaven and Earth Magick) this is a beautiful and soulful program of music for the classic instrumentation of piano, bass, and drums. "Op het album "Dream Archives" speelt de Amerikaanse pianist Craig Taborn samen met Tomeka Reid (cello) en Ches Smith (drums en vibrafoon). Het trio was november 2025 nog in het Bimhuis te zien, alleen wisten we toen niet dat ze dit bij vlagen verbijsterende album al bijna twee jaar eerder hadden opgenomen, en dachten we ten onrechte dat we Taborn wel een keertje konden overslaan. Niet dus. Het samenspel is zo knap, de improvisaties van het trio zijn zo rijk en het spel van Taborn zo ingehouden en tegelijk uitdagend, dat je na beluistering van "Dream Archives" vooral hoopt op een herkansing. In de vier eigen stukken van Taborn ontluiken in de atonale improvisaties soms de mooiste melodielijnen van Reid. Fraai is de combinatie van de vibrafoon en piano in "Enchant", maar het mooist is misschien wel de meeslepende versie van Geri Allens "When Kabuya Dances", het melodische hart van dit album." Gitarist Mary Halvorson maakt ook deel uit van het Sun Ship-ensemble van collega-gitarist Marc Ribot. Ribot, toch een echte nestor in de hedendaagse gitaarwereld, noemt Halvorson 'op dit moment de beste gitarist van New York. Ze verstaat de kunst om behalve virtuoos te spelen ook de dynamiek van ensemblespel goed aan te voelen. Het gaat niet om de solo's, maar om hoe je op elkaar reageert'. (uit het interview van Gijsbert Kamer met Ribot in de Volkskrant, 8 november 2010) Haar met vele elastische nootbuigingen opgetuigde gitaarspel doet in eerste instantie nogal bizar aan, maar blijkt binnen het creatieve spel van haar kwintet een ijzeren logica te hebben: ze kronkelt als het ware tussen de vaak strak samenspelende trompettist Jonathan Finlayson en altsaxofonist Jon Irabagon door. Een fascinerend en hoogst origineel bandgeluid is het resultaat.
"With the group’s latest offering, Hope, we find Ribot in the mood to talk. Take, for instance, the opening number, “B-Flat Ontology,” from Hope, Ceramic Dog’s latest recording. It’s a bit of punk-ass, talking blues with lyrics visceral and true questioning the meaning of fame and the fawning over fame. Hope is not a jazz record, other than its anything-goes sensibility, but Ribot has credentials as a guitarist and artist who can morph into any style and still come out sounding only like himself, which is central to the jazz aesthetic. There’s a great deal of anger here, fueled by Ribot’s concerns over COVID, a president he despised, global warming and not being able to see the ones he loved due to the pandemic.
