"Natalia Makarovas production of La Bayadère (The Temple Dancer) for the London Royal Ballet was originally created in 1980 for the American Ballet Theatre. The original Marius Petipa Bayadère ballet was produced for the Kirov Theatre and in 1992, a year after the filming of this Royal Opera House production, Nureyev would produce his own choreography at the Paris Opera, also based on Petipas version. The ballet has a strong part not only for a leading ballerina but also for the supporting role of Gamsatti, played here by Darcey Bussell and it was for her that the audience reserved their loudest applause. Makarovas choreography was beautifully conceived for the lead roles and her two leading ladies did her proud. Both Asylmuratova and Bussell were supremely graceful and elegant. An exotic and colourful production with some superb dancing by the leads but with some uneven support and rather uninspired sets and costumes." 2003-heropvoering van een typisch mid-19de eeuws ballet met toen populaire Spaans invloeden. De componisten zijn echter Frans en Tsjechisch en een Franse choreograaf maakte het voor het Russische Kirov-ballet. "Lost gem with music by Edouard-Marie-Ernest Deldevez and Ludwig Minkus. It is performed here with Joseph Mazilier's original 1846 choreography, painstakingly researched and recreated by French choreographer Pierre Lacotte and spectacularly performed by members of the Opéra National de Paris. The music has been revised and orchestrated by David Coleman, whilst Luisa Spinatelli, drawing inspiration from the original models made for the works creation, has conceived new sets and costumes." Fascinated by the knight with the unfortunate physique who goes out into the world with his servant Sancho Pansa to crusade against the deplorable state of society and to perform heroic deeds, Ludwig Minkus (1826-1917) created a ballet which had a very successful premiere in the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in 1869. This DVD presents the version choreographed by Rudolf Nurejev, as performed in a new production by the Paris opera in April 2002 with an outstanding cast, among whom were Aurélie Dupont as Kitri and Manuel Legris as Basile. Composer John Lanchberry arranged Minkus music for this version. Nurejev treated the group dance in the spirit of the Commedia dellArte; the set designer Alexandre Beliaev took inspiration for the decor and the scenery from Pastoral Scenes by Francisco Goya and from motives from the Gothic-Moorish Spain. The costumes by Elena Rivkina totally fulfil the aesthetic norms of the ballet at the end of the 19th century and have been adapted to fit the Spanish subject. (bron: TDK)
