Cass McCombs’s 10th album is an easy, rolling record that grapples with inner complexity, telling stories about musicians and soldiers, lovers and seekers. Even as this seasoned US singer-songwriter butts up against philosophical quandaries or quotes from Sufism, he never loses track of the everyday. When he isn’t making singular records, McCombs has worked in demolition and crashed on couches; his is a landscape of fast-food restaurants and karaoke machines, where vans break down, people make mistakes and die too soon. A gentle, psychedelic wash glazes this set of songs whose musical erudition is worn lightly. This album of knotty nuance bathed in melodic succour is formally dedicated to McCombs’s recently fallen musical comrades, Chet JR White, Sam Jayne and Neal Casal, who “surrendered undefeated”. McCombs trapt nooit in die valkuil, zelfs niet als hij klinkt als Ray Davies op Mystery Mail en associaties oproept met Bill Callahan op Love Thine Enemy. Daarvoor is de zanger te openhartig in zijn teksten, wat het geheel een persoonlijke touch geeft die niet met anderen te vergelijken is. "This music, designed to resist classification, is basically (horrors) indie rock, except with a crooning pianist at the helm. Stop before you imagine Ben Folds: everything here is solemn and slow, and glistens with analog reverb. Shoegazing, with wing-tip shoes. The lyrics appear fittingly sad and literate....Cass McCombs is an intriguing man. His songwriting abilities are undeniable but weirdly de-emphasized. His reedy voice is either awfully affected or poised to become one of our Great Acquired Tastes alongside Robert Smith's meow and Stephen Malkmus's yawn. A, while a fine album, is full of head-scratching choices; just as its harsh lyrics policy can't be explained by financial reasons (the inside of the CD booklet is wasted on a large Pollockian doodle), some of the production touches are just as odd. "In a handwritten note to Stereogum, McCombs recently wrote, "I know people get lonely because I do, so that's what I end up writing songs about, how you get lonely sometimes and come up with these big ideas that give you meaning for a second but then leave you like everything else leaves you." The statement is economical and accurate, if overly modest. Because while there are lots of musicians trading in loneliness out there, most of them often veer into a self-pity that can leave listeners even more far gone. But the intangibility of WIT'S END makes it a more realistic and reliable companion, its elusive secrets offering a queer comfort. At the start of his first album, A, Cass McCombs posed the question, "Is it dying that terrifies you, or just being dead?"
