"Na zijn verstilde folkplaat "Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You" (2023) nu dan een échte countryplaat van Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy? Ja en nee. Oldham blijft natuurlijk een eigenzinnige vogel. Maar mede door het legertje sessiemuzikanten van naam dat Ferguson optrommelde, heeft "The Purple Bird" zeker wel een Nashville-feel. Traditioneler dan "Turned To Dust (Rolling On)" krijg je je (moderne) country bijna niet. ‘Right is right, wrong is wrong, no matter what side you’re standing on’, zingt Oldham in die stiekem bloedserieuze oproep tot verdraagzaamheid. Ook afsluiter "Our Home" (een duet met mandolinespeler Tim O’Brien) klinkt gelijk als een evergreen in de oren. Maar dan zijn de meeste trads al afgehaakt, want die vreten de olijke inhaker "Guns Are For Cowards" vast niet. "The Purple Bird" is zo country als je het bij Will Oldham krijgt; hij bezingt onderwerpen als drinken, dood, liefde en familie, fietst er wat progressieve thema’s in en roept regelmatig de Lord aan." Will Oldham verstaat de kunst om onvoorspelbaar te blijven. Hij doet dit ook nog eens op een manier alsof het hem zelf allemaal niets kan schelen. Als Bonnie Prince Billy heeft deze Amerikaanse singer-songwriter en acteur een aantal klassiekers op zijn naam staan, zoals het door Johnny Cash gecoverde I See A Darkness. Ondanks de begenadigde songwriter die hij is, koos hij er ditmaal voor om op Wolf Of The Cosmos het volledige album Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos (2007) van de Noorse artiest Susanna te coveren. Het origineel is een plechtig Scandinavisch album, ijl gezongen en begeleid door de elite van de Noorse jazz en prog. Oldham gebruikt spaarzame, akoestische begeleiding en laat de nummers klinken of zij terloops werden opgenomen op een veranda. Maar zijn interpretaties klinken daardoor niet minder gemeend en intens. Oldham houdt hoorbaar van Mix Dwarf Cosmos, heeft de plaat doorgrond en geeft er een prachtig, eigen eerbetoon aan. (Muziekweb)
"On opening track "Like It or Not," the spare mandolin plinks, harmonizing strings, and even supporting vocals from Dane Waters all sound like they're happening in separate corners of the same room. On every track, Oldham's voice and ever-unique songwriting style are in the spotlight. There are moments of sparse, conversational Americana sweetness like the gentle back and forth between electric piano and sung verses on "Sing Them Down Together," hushed devotional balladry on the minimal "Rise And Rule (She Was Born In Honolulu)," and some puckish absurdity on the confusing sensuality of "Bananas". "Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You" is slow moving, intentional, and mysterious, with Oldham's long-practiced balance of menace and thoughtfulness at its peak. Like the best of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's work that came before it, "Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You" is the kind of record that gets played over and over until it feels like a part of the listener's personal history. "The record accompanies a six-album re-release by the singer, and presents new versions of a song from each. We’re not talking remastered material here, we’re talking re-imaginings, new arrangements, whole new areas of meaning. The viewpoint in the obsessive confessional ‘After I Made Love to You’ is, for example, made more sympathetic, reborn as a love song, characterised by crass richness rather than perversity. Perhaps the EP’s biggest surprise – and most rewarding risk – is the new version of ‘I See a Darkness’ – a surely untouchable classic, any return to which should speak of the same inherent folly as covering Joy Division’s ‘Lover Will Tear Us Apart’. But it works: a foot-stomping, country and western barn-stormer version of the song – a version where ‘Do you know how I much I love you?’ becomes the song’s tagline, instead of its title. "Nathan Salsburg, the Louisville guitarist and folklorist, who as a new father would sit in a rocking chair with his guitar held in one arm and his infant daughter Talya in another. His favoured song was "The Evidence" by Lungfish. Though the original version of "The Evidence" is only five minutes long, it’s essentially a repetitive mantra, so Salsburg could extend it as long as he wanted–10 minutes, 20 minutes, even an hour. “It was therapeutic and calming and just lovely for me,” he says. “And it worked on her.” So he proposed to Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Tyler Trotter that they record a version with Salsburg on guitar, Oldham singing, and Trotter adding drum machines and synths. They decided to pair it with a rendition of another Lungfish song; "Hear The Children Sing." The result is the beguiling "Hear The Children Sing The Evidence", an album that displays the strengths and visions of the participants while showcasing how richly powerful Lungfish’s songs are."
