"The Coral have always had a psychedelic streak. It’s this – along with their propensity for folk, ska, Merseybeat and even reggae in places – that sets them apart from other ‘guitar revivalist’ groups of the early 00s. It hasn’t led to the most consistent of catalogues, but a clutch of hits and a taste for musical variety have certainly kept them interesting. We get the retro, proggy side of the band, it turns out, with waves of Pond-esque psych pop (see the adorable Miss Fortune), motorik moments and hypnotic trips. Much about this record feels pleasingly set in the 60s: harmonies and sprawling jams in the likes of Million Eyes might as well come with their own cheesecloth and flares – evoking a lighter version of what groups like Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats have done lately. Some of the atmospherics are less commanding, but the overall hippie elegance and the reassuringly groovy likes of Holy Revelation suggests there’s a healthy amount of fire in the Coral camp yet." "Er valt een heerlijk subjectief lijstje van te maken: Bands Die Hun Debuutalbum Nooit Meer Overtroffen. Toch zal er over The Coral best enige consensus heersen: het wispelturige en geestdriftige van dat titelloze debuut uit 2002 hebben deze Scousers toch echt nooit meer aangestipt; hun mix van westcoastpop, seventiesrock, psychfolk en Britpop had potentie genoeg, maar het spanningsniveau ontsteeg vaak maar nauwelijks dat van een kabbelend beekje. "Sea Of Mirrors", het officiële nieuwe album, overigens aan de man gebracht als ‘surreal Italian spaghetti western soundtrack’. Daarop horen we The Coral weer in full swing. Al blijft ook daar, helaas, het échte gevaar buiten de deur. Gelukkig zijn er wel wat fijne flashbacks naar de eigen beginjaren (het zeemansliedgehalte van "North Wind", het kunstige arrangement van het titelnummer) en ook die panoramische samenzang verveelt natuurlijk niet snel. Maar het is allemaal te weinig om de gedachten niet wéér weemoedig te doen afdwalen naar, betere Coral-tijden." (OOR)

Ook op het tweede album klinken invloeden van the Doors, subtiele westcoast-psychedelica en andere knap in elkaar stekende pop (denk aan bijv. Lee Hazlewood) uit de tweede helft der sixties door.
