Max Richter is inmiddels een van de meest vooraanstaande namen in de scene die met de term 'neoklassiek' wordt geduid. Veelal uiterst verstilde muziek die invloeden combineert uit filmmuziek en van hedendaagse componisten als Pärt en Silvestrov (die in reactie op het serialisme juist terugkeerden naar simpele harmonieën). Richter heeft nu een contract bij het prestigieuze Deutsche Grammophon, dat nu ook z'n oudere werk heruitbrengt. Zoals dit tweede album uit 2004. Het is nu aangevuld met een bonus track. ""Three Worlds" is morose and cryptic, like the best Richter. It begins with Words containing a beautiful church bell and a sample of Virginia Woolf reading. It is tragic, mostly because its difficult to hear outside of her painful suicide letter. The calm piano on In the Garden which follows contrasts completely, as if to comfort those who know the end of Woolfs story. The violin accompaniment is simple, but flowering. War Anthem will be a highlight to those drawn to Richter's more orchestral side. The music pounds until it drops out completely, echoing with the same church bell from square one. Modular Astronomy is the bridge of the record from purely classical to a mix of electronic amongst other styles. Semi-dissonance and echoes recall Boards of Canadas excellent career. From there the album travels back and forth across the familiar ground with mostly glowing results. "Three Worlds" is rewarding as background as well as cognitive listening." Beautifully recorded and cinematic in scope, this album carries a pensive, emotionally resonant tone. Punctuated by Robert Wyatts distinctive, understated readings of Haruki Murakamis text, the music evokes forgotten memories or lost histories, a series of bittersweet articulations that seem suspended somewhere between a dreamy sense of awe and melancholia.
