Alexandre Tansman (1897-1986) is een bekende componist voor de moderne klassieke gitaar. Hij werd geboren in Polen maar vertrok in 1919 naar Parijs, waar hij het grootste deel van zijn leven zou doorbrengen. In Parijs ontmoette hij componisten als Ravel, Dukas en Roussel en de gitarist Andres Segovia, voor wie hij onder andere zijn 'Mazurka' componeerde. Ook 'Variaties over een thema van Skrjabin' en 'Hommage à Chopin' zijn opgedragen aan Segovia. In zijn composities bleef hij beínvloed door zijn Poolse achtergrond. Zo schreef hij op 85-jarige leeftijd zijn laatste werk voor gitaar, 'Hommage à Lech Walesa' (1982).
