"U zal zijn naam niet kennen, maar Roland Dyens (1955-2016) was een unieke Franse gitaarvirtuoos, componist, arrangeur en improvisator. Zijn eigen concerten begon hij steevast met een improvisatie om vervolgens de programmakeuze aan het moment over te laten. Daarnaast componeerde hij weliswaar de mooiste muziek voor gitaar die u zich kan voorstellen. Dyens werd geboren in Tunesië en woonde het grootste deel van zijn leven in Parijs. Hij studeerde bij de Spaanse klassieke gitarist Alberto Ponce en bij Désiré Dondeyne. Hij speelde Bach-suites en speelde met jazzmuzikanten op het Arvika-festival in Zweden. Dyens bracht verschillende volumes van arrangementen uit, waaronder niet alleen muziek van Fernando Sor, maar ook Braziliaanse muziek van Heitor Villa-Lobos, jazz standards van Thelonious Monk, Edith Piaf en de Gypsy-jazz van Django Reinhardt. Hij doceerde aan het Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Parijs en overleed op 29 oktober 2016 op nauwelijks 61-jarige leeftijd." (Stretto)
"This work, which was commissioned by the "Semaine de guitare en Tricastin", was written in homage to Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and at its first performance in Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, in south-east France, on 1st May 1991, there were over twenty guitarists on stage. On that occasion I was unwise enough to wear two hats, one as soloist (with my guitar slung from my shoulders!) and one as conductor. Although it was an inspiring, not to say athletic experience, my advice for future performers is to leave the conducting firmly in the hands of a single director. As a soloist, you will then be free, as I most certainly was not, to concentrate on a guitar part that is as demanding as any solo concerto part can be. Good advice apart, I have only to add that if you enjoy rhythm, if you fall for highly lyrical slow movements and modal music, and if the idea of scordatura bodes no fear, and if, furthermore, you have a good ten or so adventurous and enthusiastic friends, then this concerto is, quite simply, for you."

"Classical guitarist Roland Dyens proves on "Night and Day" that he is fabulously bilingual. It showcases Dyens facility with novel and virtuosic renderings of classic American jazz standards on solo nylon-string guitar. Dyens plays on one guitar: particularly on "Bluesette", "All the Things You Are" and "Take the A Train", one must pause to verify that these are not duos. And as any serious musician strives to do, the technical difficulty of these arrangements is camouflaged, made subliminal by the carefree and contagious exuberance Dyens infuses into these tunes. Even the simpler, slower melodies "I Love Paris", "Misty", and "Over the Rainbow" find a very complex expression with Dyens genius for arranging... but in the process of finding their way to your ear become simple and natural. De gitaarvirtuoos speelt op dit album stukken die afkomstig zijn uit een brede waaier aan stijlen en landen, door hemzelf in een solo-gitaararrangement gegoten - soms al jaren voordat hij ze opnam voor deze CD uit 1998. Django Reinhardt is ongetwijfeld een van de vele voorbeelden van de man en een arrangement van diens "Nuages" opent het album. Even verstild als elegant sluit het album een uur later af met een zeer geslaagd arrangement van het pianostuk "Gnossienne Nr 1" van Satie. Daartussen adapteert hij net zo gemakkelijk bossa nova als bebop en speelt hij tevens een handvol eigen werken. Virtuoos als hij weet hij in zijn spel een weldadige rust te leggen, óók als het vingervlug is.
