"Gurney is one of the finest of all English song composers. Not only is his music memorable, enhancing the texts and drawing out the meanings they contain, but also he had a perspicacious eye for suitable texts to set. Though many female singers perform songs by Gurney, I’m not aware of many CDs entirely devoted to his songs on which the singer is a lady. If for no other reason than that, therefore, this recital by Susan Bickley would be welcome but its overall excellence makes it doubly welcome. I enjoyed this disc enormously. Susan Bickley’s singing gives consistent pleasure. Her tone is full and warm and the restrained way in which she deploys vibrato is one reason, I’m sure, why her diction is very clear throughout. She understands these songs and sings them with great sensitivity and intelligence. Iain Burnside offers a fine contribution. This is a very fine recital containing many first rate songs. Het uitbreken van de Eerste wereldoorlog werd in heel Europa door velen enthousiast begroet. Ook de Engelse componist Ivor Gurney (1890-1937) wilde liefst zo snel mogelijk onder de wapenen; uiteindelijk moest hij wachten tot 1916, toen hij in Frankrijk aan het front werd gestationeerd. Aanvankelijk voelde hij zich daar prima bij; vooral genoot hij van de onderlinge kameraadschap der soldaten. Het leek hem niet te deren dat hij door de oorlog geen gevolg kon geven aan zijn muzikale studie, die hij in 1914 in Londen onder leiding van Stanford had afgerond. In 1917 raakte hij echter twee keer achter elkaar gewond en een jaar later keerde hij psychisch gebroken naar zijn vaderland terug. Hij zou nog maar vier jaar hebben om te componeren; in 1922 was zijn gedrag zo psychotisch geworden dat hij in een inrichting werd ondergebracht. Daar zou hij ook sterven. (...)
