Ik vocht voor mijn leven tot ik wakker werd. De gestalte kwam iedere nacht terug, en ik bracht mijn dagen door in angst voor zijn terugkeer. Tenslotte, na tientallen van deze gevechten, leerde ik mij over te geven, deel te worden ervan, en na een poos eindigden de nachtelijke bezoeken." Each of the four movements of 'A Tapestry of Life' (2007) is well contrasted and expressively affecting. The performance by the Helsinki Philharmonic under Leif Segerstam is first rate. This Ondine release includes world premiere recordings of four works by the celebrated Finnish contemporary composer Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928). Rubáiyát (2015) is a song cycle based on the poetry of Omar Khayyam. The work was written for Gerald Finley who in this recording sings the solo part of the orchestral version of the work. Balada (2014), based on texts by Lorca, is a large-scale work for tenor, mixed choir and orchestra. Tenor Mika Pohjonen sings as the soloist. This cantata was premiered in Madrid in May 2015. Into the Heart of Light (Canto V; 2012) is the composer's latest instalment in a series of works for string orchestra that share the title Canto. Rautavaara wrote the first of his Cantos in the 1960s, and each piece in the series have represented well the latest stylistic developments by the composer. The concluding work of the recording is Four Songs from the opera Rasputin. These dramatic songs were arranged by the composer for mixed choir and orchestra in 2012. Einojuhani Rautavaara (Helsinki, 9 oktober 1928 aldaar, 27 juli 2016) was een Finse componist en muziekpedagoog. (...) Rautavaara componeerde veel muziek voor symfonieorkest waaronder acht symfonieën, veel geestelijke vocale muziek en negen opera's. Hij werd gerekend tot de belangrijkste en in het buitenland bekendste Finse componisten. Hij heeft een groot aantal prijzen en onderscheidingen ontvangen. Hij was constructivist en aan de andere kant een mysticus. Zijn mysticisme betuigde hij allereerst in zijn interesse voor het religieus-metafysische materiaal en het gebruik van teksten uit het sjamanisme tot de Oosterse Orthodoxie, en verder door in zijn stijl het componeren te mystificeren. Het gaat om scheppingsprocessen die het construerende intellect van de componist niet beheerst.
