"This jam-packed two-disc set offers up the lion's share of their "Beeb" material. Like most BBC collections, these performances sound drier and more stripped-down than the studio versions, but since 'stripped-down' was a thing the Pretty Things did quite well, this isn't much of a drawback. There's enough swaggering attitude to face an army (best reflected in Phil May's gloriously insolent vocals and Dick Taylor's switchblade guitar). The band's psychedelic period kicks off midway through disc one, and while the studio gingerbread of "S.F. Sorrow" and "Parachute" doesn't quite make it onto tape here, these simpler arrangements make a fine case for the strength of the material. Disc two is where this set gets to be rough sledding for many fans: the boogie-centric rock of their '70s period commands far fewer partisans, and that's what dominates the second half of this program. "Though this double-CD collection presents 30 songs recorded by the Searchers for BBC sessions, it actually spans a relatively small portion of their career, from January 1965 to March 1967 (with over half the material coming from 1965 alone). The band recorded yet more BBC sessions, but these are the only ones (except for a few similar duplicate versions, omitted to avoid redundancy) known to survive in releasable form, which is why there's nothing from 1963-1964, when they were actually at the peak of their popularity. Incomplete though it is, it's a valuable archival find for serious Searchers fans, even if, like many BBC session compilations, the performances don't vary too much from the familiar studio versions (except for the arrangements often being somewhat more thinly produced). It does have six songs that didn't make it onto their '60s studio releases. Also along for the ride are numerous more obscure B-sides, album cuts, and flops that testify to their versatility." 25 Door de band zelf uitgekozen live-radio-opnamen, gemaakt voor o.a. het beroemde programma van wijlen John Peel. De zorgvuldig (met o.a. viool en blazers) gearrangeerde en altijd aangenaam herfstige kamerpop blijkt prima live te reproduceren en wint zelfs aan intensiteit en expressiviteit t.o.v. de soms wel érg donkerbruine plaatversies. Tindersticks-toetsenist David Boulter schreef de hoestekst, waarin hij uitlegt waarom gekozen is uit werk van de eerste 5 bandjaren. Tijdens een latere sessie vond hij de groep namelijk niet in vorm: 'maybe we were starting to get a bit burnt out, or just too bloody professional!'. Uniek hier is de Pavement-cover "Here", alsmede "Rhumba" dat geschreven werd voor de Claire Denis-film "Nenette Et Boni", maar niet vaak live werd gespeeld. Voor de rest komt het repertoire van de eerste 3 albums.
Verzameling vroege radio-opnamen. CD1 bevat sessies voor diverse BBC-programma's uit '69, toen Led Zep nog uitsluitend harde bluesrock maakte, incl. 3 songs die geen reguliere LP-release hebben gekend. CD2 is een concert uit '71, t.t.v. 'IV'.
"Pigbag was a good example of the restlessness of the late-'70s/early-'80s post-punks. Rather than conform to a defined sound, the group blended elements of funk and jazz into their "anything goes" attitude. Thanks to a successful support gig with the Slits, Pigbag found themselves signed with Y Records.
